Q: A debt collector keeps harassing me about a debt I do not owe, what can I do?
A: Send the debt collector a certified letter, return receipt requested asking that they verify the debt. I could put a sample letter here, but there are many that can be found on the internet. I suggested contacting me before sending out any letter! I would be glad to help.
You can also ask them in the certified letter to stop contacting you because you do not owe the debt. Once you have told them this, they are barred under the FDCPA from contacting you.
However, it is very important to check all 3 credit reports to make sure that this debt is not being reporting on your report. You can get your report at www.annualcreditreport.com.
