Q: Can a debt collector garnish your wages?
A: Absolutely not. In Pennsylvania a debt collector cannot garnish your wages. A debt collector cannot threaten to garnish your wages. This is definitely a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Debt collectors, as you may be learning are scum bags (most of them). Remember, a lot of times, debt collectors get paid on commission. Obviously, forcing them to threaten you where it hurts.
If a consumer is not aware of their rights and think that a debt collector might garnish their paycheck......then they will be more inclined to pay up whatever the collector is asking for. Please, do not do this. A debt collector CANNOT garnish your wages in Pennsylvania.
Now, the IRS has the authority to garnish your wages for back taxes or student loan payments. But debt collectors definitely do not!
