Q: Can I negotiate a payment or the settlement of a debt with the debt collector?
A: Yes, you can. Our firm does not handle any negotiations regarding your debt with the debt collector.
However if you do negotiate a settlement, please keep the following in mind.
1. A debt collector does not have the authority to take this negative account off your credit. If they tell you that they will do this in turn for full payment of the debt, they are simply lying. Collectors have no authority to take off accounts on credit reports.
2. Make sure to get any payment plans or settlements in writing from the debt collector.
3. Do not give out a credit card number of checking account number for payment options.
4. If you are settling the debt for less than what you owe, get in writing from the debt collector that it is paid in full and the debt has been satisfied. Make sure you keep an eye on your credit report. Although, the debt cannot be deleted, it should be marked off as paid or satisfied.
