A: Generally speaking, no. Under most state laws and instances you are not obligated by law to pay your loved one's unsecured debt. Please make sure to know that this will NOT stop the debt collectors from contacting you. They will not tell you that you don't have to pay the debt unless you specifically ask, and sometimes may still not be truthful. Some debt collectors are specifically trained in dealing with collections from grieving family members.
However, there may be a few exceptions with taxes and mortgages. You will want to speak with attorney in your area. You can find an attorney in your area at www.naca.net.
